Our Tuft & Needle Mattress Review

We have been sleeping on our king sized Tuft & Needle mattress, in our new master bedroom, for a little over one month now and the verdict is – we LOVE it. But, there are definitely some things you should know if you’re thinking about getting one.

We bought this mattress for a few main reasons:

  • It works on any type of bed or platform, including no platform at all (some similar mattresses require no boxspring or a specific type, which might require you to get a new bed)
  • The price – it was significantly cheaper than competitors (i.e. Casper, Leesa, Purple) but has the same warranty and 100 night free-trial
  • It comes direct to your door and you never have to work with a pushy salesperson. Here’s what happened when it arrived:

First, the shipping is super fast which is generally awesome. For us, it was too fast because we were unprepared, but when I say fast, I mean it! I ordered the mattress at 8 p.m. on a Wednesday night and had it by Noon on Friday. FAST! (And we live in the middle of nowhere)

Second, the mattress comes in one, large, tall box. And it’s HEAVY. Our box for a king mattress was 90 pounds! You will definitely need help trying to get it upstairs or you can be a crazy person like me and do it yourself over an entire afternoon while having thoughts on whether or not someone has ever died trying to carry a mattress upstairs. And, don’t think you’re being savvy by trying to unbox it before you bring it up – KEEP IT IN THE BOX until it’s right where you want it, then begin unboxing.

Third, the big reveal. After getting it upstairs, the hard work was mostly done. I pulled it out of the box, unrolled it, then unwrapped it, and listened to it breathe. Seriously, it hisses. It quickly came to its full shape, but per the instructions, I let it breathe for several hours before putting sheets on. You can view Tuft & Needle’s unboxing video here

Now, here’s where things get a little disappointing. I can overlook the big box and heavy lifting since if I would have waited for my husband, this wouldn’t have been an issue. But, the mattress has a strong “off-gas” odor. This odor lasted for almost two weeks. It didn’t bother me too much after the first couple of nights, but it really bothered my husband. We sleep with an essential oil diffuser in our room, so that definitely helped offset the smell, but you should be aware of this if you purchase a Tuft & Needle (or other similar) mattress.

The mattress itself is SO comfortable. We do not find it to be too firm for our liking, it’s honestly perfect. However, we have friends with one and they thought it was too firm. After making a call to Tuft & Needle, they were sent a mattress topper and now they love it. The mattress doesn’t have springs, so it is really stable. At night, we don’t feel each other move or our dog move around either. It also doesn’t trap heat the way older mattresses do, which is a big plus.

All in all, we would definitely recommend this mattress to anyone, and already have to a few people. It is competitively priced, comfortable, and easy to welcome into your home.

  1. Great review, I’d go crazy without my king size! Seriously, you moved the mattress box yourself… impressive!

  2. Sounds awesome. I’ll probably be in the market for a new bed soon so I’ll totally keep this in mind. I’m glad you mentioned not to unbox it until you get it where you want it. That’s a mistake I would totally make.
